The kiddos are learning about changing fractions from mixed numbers to improper fractions, improper fractions to mixed numbers, and adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Our essential question is: How do we overcome obstacles? Student Objectives:
Writing: Students will also begin learning about and writing a personal narrative. We will start the planning process this week. Students will learns ways to begin their Narrative to "Hook" their reader. They will use transition words and phrases, Dialogue, and learn ways to conclude their writing. Spelling: Students received their spelling lists last Friday. They will test over these words on Friday, February 1st. Vocabulary for this week is: Immigrants: a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country Immigration: the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country Elevation: height above a given level, especially sea level Social Studies: Students will begin researching an immigrant group this week. These are groups that have immigrated to Kansas and helped to make our state the great state it is today! They will be working with 1-2 other students. The groups are: Vietnamese, African Americans, Swedish, British, Croatian, Potawatomi, Mexican, Czech, French, Lebanese, Italians, and Germans. They will learn where their group came from, where they settled in Kansas, when they immigrated, and why they immigrated. Students will create a presentation to share with the rest of their classmates. Tuesday, January 29th is Kansas Day! Please encourage your child to wear their Kansas gear to celebrate! This could be K-State or KU gear! Or even sunflowers! On Wednesday, January 30th we will be doing the Amazing Race Kansas Edition! Book Club: Our Quarter 3 book club will be reading Fish in a Tree. This book club is optional. If your child will be participating, please let their teacher know. We will meet during lunch to discuss the book later in March. The date for this is Monday, March 4th. It will be on Friday, March 1st. Please book this date if you are able to attend. It will be from 1:00-2:45 in the 4th and 5th grade pods. More information regarding this will come home on January 28th. There will be a permission slip for you to sign and send back in to your child's teacher. Students need to have their book pick out and permission slip turned in by Monday, February 4th. Final scripts are due Monday, February 25th and the Wax Museum will be on Friday, March 1st.
