Quarterly Book Report BOOK & PROJECT SELECTED: Tuesday, September 6th PROJECT DUE: Monday, October 10th Students will come home with information regarding their book report. They need to pick out the book and the report project by Tuesday, September 6th and have it approved by the teacher. The selections for the projects will be done at school. The students might need help from you picking out the book. They will get ideas and suggestions from their teacher. The documents for the project are posted on the Documents Page in case you need it. Spelling Expect to see a spelling list come home on Monday to study for the test on Friday. Please visit the Documents to find a copy of the spelling words. Students are expected to write down the spelling words in their agenda. The emphasis for this week's words is on the prefix sub-. The words are the same as last week, except for the vocabulary words. The students will be expected to spell the words this week. In addition to the spelling words on the worksheet, students are focusing on vocabulary words each week. These words are also part of their spelling and applying them into sentences. So, students will spell the Sub- words and will write the vocabulary words in sentences. Vocabulary words this week: Immigrants Customs Culture Math - Place Value Students will have their first test in math over Place Value: Topic 3 on Monday August 29th. To help them review, look over pages 84-85. If they forgot their book at school, they can access their math book online. Their log in's for Envision Math is recorded in their agenda! Here are some review games to help get ready for the test. Expanded Form Matching Half Court Rounding (Basketball) Place Value Puzzler After the Topic 3 test we will begin Topic 4. Math - Adding and Subtracting with Whole Numbers This week we are starting Topic 4: Addition and Subtraction while focusing on mental math and estimation to verify the correct answer. Often times students are able to do the math on paper, yet mentally solving the answer does not come as naturally. This unit will focus on enhancing those skills. We will talk to the kids about getting out their Math Tool Belt where we have a variety of strategies to help them with adding and subtracting mentally. Each strategy will work differently for each kid. We're asking that they try the strategy and find the one that works for them! Reading This week we continue reading the Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing. Students will focus on the literary elements of Summarizing, Point of View and Comparing Characters. Ask your kids each night what Fudge did in each chapter. You'll never believe the grief he causes! Writing and Grammar Students are focusing on writing correct sentences by analyzing complete sentences, fragments, and run-on sentences. Students will also be forming paragraphs with Topic Sentences, Relevant Details, and Clinchers (conclusions) Social Studies: Students will continue learning about and practicing Map Skills. We will finish up Map Skills this week and start our Map Test on Friday.
