Math - Adding and Subtracting with Whole Numbers This week we are starting Topic 4: Addition and Subtraction while focusing on mental math and estimation to verify the correct answer. Often times students are able to do the math on paper, yet mentally solving the answer does not come as naturally. This unit will focus on enhancing those skills. We will talk to the kids about getting out their Math Tool Belt where we have a variety of strategies to help them with adding and subtracting mentally. Each strategy will work differently for each kid. We're asking that they try the strategy and find the one that works for them! Spelling: Students took a Words Their Way placement test the first week of school to determine their spelling needs and their group they will be placed in. This Friday, they will meet with their spelling group for the first time. They will receive their first spelling list to start studying. Their spelling group teacher will not necessarily be their classroom teacher. Extra spelling lists will be able to be found under the Documents page on the blog. You will need to know their spelling teacher in order to know which list to choose. Our first test will be on Friday, September 6th. There are 12 spelling words and 3 content vocabulary words. They need to know the patterns and spelling of the 12 spelling words and the definitions of the vocabulary words. They will be expected to apply the vocabulary words correctly in a sentence. Reading This week we continue reading and finish the Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing novel. Students will focus on the literary elements of Summarizing, Point of View and Comparing Characters. Ask your kids each night what Fudge did in each chapter. You'll never believe the grief he causes! Students will start working on their final project for the novel at the end of the week when we finish reading it! Writing: This week we will continue reviewing Capitalization and Punctuation. We will also begin talking about good quality sentences. Students are learning to identify the subject and predicate in a sentence. They are also working on fixing sentence fragments and run-on's. We will start learning about how to write a Friendly Letter and put our knowledge of sentences to work! Social Studies: Students will continue learning about and practicing Map Skills. This week we will focus on Longitude and Latitude along with Landforms. We will finish up Map Skills this week by starting an Autobiography Island Map project!
