Topic 5/6 Math test: Monday, October 29th Halloween Parade and Party: Wednesday, October 31st @ 2:45 (parade) & 3:00 (party) Animal Adaptation Skype: Thursday, November 1st Spelling Test: Friday, November 2nd Cougar Dens and Assembly: Friday, November 2nd- Wear Mill Valley or PRE Spirit Wear Food and Change Drive: November 5th-9th Music Program: Thursday, November 8th @ 9:00 am and 6:30 pm Community Service Opportunity: November 9th Bingo Night: November 9th Math: We will take our Topic 5/6 Math Test on Monday. On Tuesday, we will be starting Topic 7 and 8. These 2 topics will be combined into 1 topic. Topic 7: Multiplying by Double Digit Numbers and Topic 8: Building Fluency with Multiplying by Double Digit Numbers. Students will continue to practice the strategies that worked for them with single digit multiplication. Check out the enVision website on the Student Quick Links to see the math book and videos from the lessons! Students will have an in class math project assigned on Monday, November 5th. Students will work with a partner to plan a Thanksgiving Meal using the data they will collect from the grocery store. Students will finish and present these to the class the week of Thanksgiving. Reading: We will continue in Unit 3: Observing Nature. We will be reading Informational Text. Students will read and analyze literary and informational texts about the natural world, share ideas with peers, build vocabulary knowledge, and practice research skills. Our essential question for this unit is: How do we respond to nature? Spelling: We have new spelling lists for this week. Extra copies of the lists can be found on the documents page of this blog. Vocabulary words for the week: 1. Opinion: a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge 2. First person narrative: A first-person narrative is a mode of storytelling in which a narrator relays events from their own point of view using the first person i.e. "I" or "we", etc. It may be narrated by a first person protagonist, first person re-teller, first person witness, or first person peripheral 3. Theme: the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person's thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic Writing: For most of 2nd quarter, we will be focusing on Informational writing. Students will learn about Informational text features and how that helps us to read Informational text and organize it in our writing. This week, students will be choosing their animal to write about. They will first research this animal. They will be researching about their Physical and Behavioral Adaptations. Science: This week we will continue in our Life Science unit from our National Geographic textbooks. We will be learning about the Structure and Function of animals. On Thursday, we get to Skype with the Buffalo Bill center of the West about Animal Adaptations! Book Club: For quarter 2, we will be reading Out of my Mind. This is available to purchase here: https://www.amazon.com/Out-My-Mind-Sharon-Draper/dp/1416971718/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539811794&sr=8-1&keywords=out+of+my+mind or as an audio book on the Learning Ally app. This app is free and kids have a subscription to it through our school (thank you PTO!). They will be getting their logins soon. This book club is OPTIONAL. We will meet to discuss this book at the end of quarter 2 during our lunch time. The date is TBD. Please let your child's teacher know if your student is going to participate.
