Quick Reminders:
Upcoming Dates:
Math - Place Value Students will have their first test in math over Place Value: Topic 3 on Wednesday, August 29th. To help them review, look over pages 84-85. If they forgot their book at school, they can access their math book online. Their log in's for Envision Math is recorded in their agenda! Here are some review games to help get ready for the test. Expanded Form Matching Half Court Rounding (Basketball) Place Value Puzzler After the Topic 3 test we will begin Topic 4. Math - Adding and Subtracting with Whole Numbers This week we are starting Topic 4: Addition and Subtraction while focusing on mental math and estimation to verify the correct answer. Often times students are able to do the math on paper, yet mentally solving the answer does not come as naturally. This unit will focus on enhancing those skills. We will talk to the kids about getting out their Math Tool Belt where we have a variety of strategies to help them with adding and subtracting mentally. Each strategy will work differently for each kid. We're asking that they try the strategy and find the one that works for them! Reading This week we continue reading and finish the Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing novel. Students will focus on the literary elements of Summarizing, Point of View and Comparing Characters. Ask your kids each night what Fudge did in each chapter. You'll never believe the grief he causes! Social Studies: Students will continue learning about and practicing Map Skills. This week we will focus on Longitude and Latitude along with Land forms. We will finish up Map Skills this week by starting an Autobiography Island Map project! Writing: This week we will continue talking about good quality sentences. Students are learning to identify the subject and predicate in a sentence. They are also working on fixing sentence fragments and run-on's. We will start learning about how to write a Friendly Letter and put our knowledge of sentences to work! Quarter 1 Book Club: This year we will do a quarterly book club. This book club is optional! If students would like to participate, please let your 4th grade teacher know. For Quarter 1, we will be reading Holes. The book needs to be finished by Wednesday, October 9th. On that day, we will meet during our lunch time, in the pod area, to have a Chew and Chat and discuss the book! Students will read this book independently. They can track their reading minutes on their reading logs! They can also use their Daily 5 time in class to read the book if they have their other Daily 5 work finished. Again, this is optional!
