February 22 Spelling Test and Mahaffie Farmstead comes to us for an Oregon Trail activity! February 25 Wax Museum Script due and Read Across America Week begins March 1 Wax Museum March 4 Quarter 3 Book Club Math: We will continue in Topic 13 this week. Topic 13 is over Fraction concepts such as multiplying fractions by a whole number, decimal place value, comparing and ordering decimals, and equivalent fractions and decimals. This is our last Topic over Fractions! We can do it! Our essential question for this unit is: How do communities evolve? Student Objectives: Read and analyze personal journals, diaries, and informational text about the past. Share ideas with peers Build vocabulary knowledge Write informational, narrative, and opinion texts. We will also start our new class novel, Bound for Oregon. This book is about a family that takes the trip to Oregon! Writing: Students will continue to finish up their Personal Narratives during their Daily 5 time. During our writing block time in class, we will bind together our Oregon Trail journals and start journaling about our journey West! Ask your child what they encountered on the trail each day! Spelling: Students received their spelling lists last week. They will test over these words on Friday, February 22nd. Vocabulary for this week is: Energy: power from physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or to work machines. Example: The panels turn solar energy into electricity Motion: the action or process of moving or being moved Transferred: move from one place to another Social Studies: This week we will finish up If I traveled West in a Covered Wagon and then begin to integrate social studies into reading and writing with our Bound for Oregon novel and Oregon Trail journals. Science: This week we will begin our Physical Science unit. This is a long unit with a lot of fun experiments! Students will learn about Energy Waves: Waves and Information. Book Club: Our Quarter 3 book club will be reading Fish in a Tree. This book club is optional. If your child will be participating, please let their teacher know. We will meet during lunch to discuss the book later in March. The date for this is Monday, March 4th. Read Across America Spirit Week: February 25th-March 1st Monday: PJ day! Tuesday: Wear a shirt from vacation! Wednesday: Dress wacky! Thursday: Wear your favorite hat! Friday: Wear red, blue, purple, or green!
